DBT
What is DBT?
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a structured, evidence-based form of psychotherapy designed to help individuals manage intense emotions, reduce impulsive behaviors, and strengthen interpersonal relationships. Originally developed for borderline personality disorder (BPD), DBT is now widely used for mood disorders, self-harm behaviors, trauma-related conditions, and emotional dysregulation.
DBT can be delivered in individual therapy, skills-training groups, or combined programs and is suitable for adolescents and adults struggling with chronic emotional instability.
How Does Dialectical Behavior Therapy Work?
DBT follows a structured process that teaches clients skills to manage emotional sensitivity and impulsive reactions. The therapy consists of four main components:
- Mindfulness
Helps clients stay present, observe emotions without judgment, and reduce emotional reactivity.
2. Distress Tolerance
Teaches strategies to survive emotional crises without harmful behaviors like self-harm or impulsive decisions.
3. Emotion Regulation
Helps identify, understand, and manage overwhelming emotions while reducing vulnerability to mood swings.
4. Interpersonal Effectiveness
Builds skills to communicate needs clearly, set boundaries, and improve relationships.
DBT often includes individual sessions, skills training, and homework to encourage real-world practice. Treatment typically lasts from 12 weeks to one year depending on the individual’s needs and severity of symptoms.
